Die Übung steht in enger Verbindung mit dem Grundkurs „Gewalt und Genozid“. die beiden Veranstaltungen sollten nur gemeinsam belegt werden. Die Übung verfolgt drei Ziele. Erstens wird das historische Hintergrundwissen zum Grundkurs „Gewalt und Genozid“ vermittelt resp. erarbeitet. Zweitens werden Fähigkeiten wie z.B. die Mitschrift eines Vortrags, wissenschaftliches Lesen und Schreiben, die Methode der Quellenkritik, das Erarbeiten und Präsentieren von Ergebnissen, eingeübt. Drittens geht es in der Übung um eine kritische Reflexion auf die theoretischen Grundprobleme des Grundkurses. Wie bestimmen Begriffe das historische Denken? Was ist historische Objektivität? Welche Tradition hat unser Fach?
Die Übung kombiniert Elemente einer klassischen Vorlesung mit Gruppen- und Einzelarbeit
