Sich eigener Zugehörigkeiten und Identität zu vergewissern, bedeutet auch, diese zu erinnern, aufzuarbeiten und anzupassen. Hierbei assistieren die Massenmedien, indem sie relevante Ereignisse und Entwicklungen auswählen, archivieren und (bei Bedarf) verfügbar machen, auf die sich kollektives und indididuelles Erinnern beziehen kann. Massenmedien definieren erinnerungswerte und -unwürdige Ereignisse und Entwicklungen. Sie bieten darüber hinaus Ausdrucks- und Darstellungsmittel für die Art und Weise, wie und was erinnert werden kann bzw. soll. Demgegenüber eröffnen soziale Netzwerke mit ihren ungewöhnlichen Eingriffs- und Beteiligungsmöglichkeiten Arenen für die Auseinandersetzung mit massenmedial verbreiteten erinnerungswürdigen Ereignissen, aber auch mit den öffentlich geführten Versuchen der Entwertung von Erinnerungen und entsprechendem Wissen. Das Seminar dient der Einführung in diese Zusammenhänge.
