271010 Empra in Developmental Psychology and Developmental Psychopathology (S) (SoSe 2021)

What is this seminar about?
The goal of this Empra is to explore and understand topics of developmental psychopathology such as mental health and wellbeing (such as affective/emotional wellbeing), and use experience sampling approaches to study this phenomenon.
The summer semester will prepare students to conduct and run their own experience sampling study during or before the winter semester. Guidance will be provided on how to conduct literature searches and examine the quality of available evidence, and in the formulation of research questions. Students will also have the opportunity to learn about report writing, which in the summer semester will focus on the introduction and methods section in particular. Students will also learn about referencing, and referece management software. Traditional and contemporary methodologies that have been used to examine topics of mental health will be discussed, with a focus on experience sampling approaches.. By the end of this semester, all study protocol and material is expected to be in place and ready to be executed in the following months.
In the winter semester, students will be involved in data collection. Sessions will focus on data analysis approaches (and students will be expected to conduct their own analyses using SPSS). Other aspects of report writing will be discussed, namely results and discussion. By the end of this semester, students should be able to write a report detailing their study, and present their findings to their peers.

Other:
It is encouraged to examine the effects of factors such as social and electronic media use on aspects of mental health and wellbeing, but other topics can be decided in self-study.
