401522 BHC52: Heat waves and health: Improving knowledge ans responses in german univerity setting (Pj) (WiSe 2020/2021)

Contents, comment

"Students in Bachelor of Science degree program in Health Communication take part in practical projects during their fifth semester (Winter Semester). Within this framework, students complete a project on a specific health issue and intervention, which requires them to systematically consolidate evidence-based information about the health topic and present their results in various media formats. As part of their research or intervention, the students may also conduct interviews or visit relevant organisations.

The proposed practice project focuses on the contemporary global health topic of heat waves and health, and will be run in English language. Specifically, it focuses on the existing evidence of extreme weather and heat waves and how to improve the knowledge and response of the German public to managing the risks and effects of heat exposure, using the German university setting as an example.

During the project, students will receive inputs and collaborate with staff from the World Health Organization (WHO) European Centre for Environment and Health in Bonn, which is a centre of scientific excellence of the WHO Regional Office for Europe. Experts on the topic and on health communication from other organisations will also be invited to talk to students during the project.

The main aim will be for students to learn the steps involved in the design and development of an evidence-informed social media communication campaign at Bielefeld University about how to manage the health risks and impacts of heat waves."
