Die philosophische Beschäftigung mit geistigen Krankheiten nimmt vier Formen an. Erstens, stellen sich begriffliche Fragen. Zweitens, ist die psychiatrische Diagnose und Behandlung ein ethisch höchst relevantes Feld. Drittens, kann die Psychiatrie als Spezialwissenschaft mit den Begriffen und Methoden der Wissenschaftstheorie untersucht werden. Und viertens können psychopathologische Phänomene Prüfsteine für Theorien in der Philosophie des Geistes liefern.
Ein Seminar kann nicht alle diese Aspekte behandeln, ohne oberflächlich zu werden. Daher werden wir uns in diesem Seminar – anhand neuer, englischsprachiger Einführungstexte und Forschungsbeiträge – mit folgenden wissenschaftstheoretischen Fragen auseinandersetzen: Was sind geistige Krankheiten? Was ist Psychiatrie? Wie funktionieren Erklärungen in der Psychiatrie? Wie funktionieren Klassifikationen in der Psychiatrie? Ist Psychiatrie ohne Klassifikationen möglich? Lassen sich geistige Krankheiten auf neuronale Krankheiten reduzieren?
