This module examines a range of texts (literary, non-literary, visual texts, film and music) which have been created out of the experience of African peoples in the diaspora from the eighteenth century to the present. It will concentrate on Black European, Afro-North American, American, Afro-Caribbean, Afro-Latin American and African texts viewing them as products of shared cultural heritages and as responses to slavery, colonialism and racism. It will also show the linkages between all such texts despite geographical distance.
Students will be required to participate regularly, read all required texts in advance of their discussion in class, and provide short written response to several texts. While some of the texts to be discussed were originally written in other languages than English and course participants may read them in the original, all texts will be made available and discussed (both orally and in writing) in English.
All texts of the course will be made available electronically.
