This course focuses on major texts written and published in the period from the late 19th to the early 20th centuries, including short stories such as Thomas Hardy’s “For Conscience’ Sake” (1891) and D.H. Lawrence’s “Odour of Chrysanthemums” (1914), poems like William Butler Yeats’s “The Second Coming” (1919) and Virginia Woolf’s novel To the Lighthouse (1927). We will identify the characteristics of realist and modernist modes of writing and discuss their functions and effects. Studying exemplary texts, we will combine close readings (based on the analytical categories from the lecture ‘Analysing and Interpreting Literary Texts’) with historical contextualisation and a discussion of the cultural, social and political implications of the texts and modes of writing.
Please purchase: Virginia Woolf, To the Lighthouse (preferably Penguin Classics edition)
Further material will be provided.
