Wie lassen sich Informationen strukturieren? Wie lassen sich Daten repräsentieren, abfragen und in andere Repräsentationen und Formate transformieren? Diese Fragen sind aktuell in vielen Bereichen sehr relevant: bei der Speicherung und Archivierung wissenschaftlicher Daten, beim Umgang mit großen Datenmengen (Big Data), im Semantic Web, oder in praktischen Anwendungen im Verlagswesen und im World Wide Web.

Diese Veranstaltung thematisiert die Modellierung von Daten mittels der Extensible Markup Language (XML), einer standardisierten Metasprache, deren verschiedene Dialekte zur Modellierung, Repräsentation, Abfrage, Transformation und Darstellung von Daten in XML-Formaten genutzt werden kann. Spezifischer wird es in der Veranstaltung um die Modellierung von XML-Dialekten mittels DTD und XML-Schema und der Transformation von XML-Dokumenten mit der XML-basierten Programmiersprache eXtensible Stylesheet Language Transformations (XSLT) gehen.

Die Veranstaltung besteht aus einer Vorlesung in der XML, die erwähnten XML-Dialekte und Werkzeuge zu ihrer Verarbeitung konzeptuell behandelt werden sowie aus Übungen, in denen das erworbene Wissen praktische angewendet wird.
