Die deutsche Wehrmacht im Zweiten im Zweiten Weltkrieg war lange Zeit Gegenstand von Mythen und Legenden, die in der Zeit nach Ende des Krieges wie ein Schutzwall um sie herum aufgeschichtet und sorgsam gepflegt wurden. Seit Beginn der 1990er Jahre hat die neuere Forschung dagegen einen um den anderen Mythos dekonstruiert: die Legende vom "Blitzkrieg", von der "sauberen Wehrmacht", von der "strategischen und taktischen Überlegenheit" in den ersten Kriegsjahren und viele andere mehr.
Das Seminar zielt darauf ab, diese neueren Forschungsergebnisse zwar exemplarisch, aber doch in synthetisierender Absicht in einem Tiefenblick auf die Anatomie und Entwicklung einer überstürzt konzipierten und aufgebauten Angriffsarmee zusammenzuführen.
Dabei wird es auch um die in der "Neuen Militärgeschichte" häufig etwas beiseite gedrängte "Operationsgeschichte" gehen, die aber nicht als Spiel mit bunten Fähnchen und Pfeilen auf Landkarten, sondern als eine soziale und kulturelle Praxisgeschichte einer kämpfenden Truppe aufgefasst wird.
