In den Massenmedien haben sich verbindliche Normen für die journalistische Darstellung herausgebildet. Für unterschiedliche Kommunikationsabsichten – Information, Aufklärung, Meinungsbeeinflussung, Unterhaltung – stehen verschiedene Textsorten zu Verfügung, gekennzeichnet durch unterschiedliche Anforderungen an Inhalt, Stoffaufbereitung und stilistische Gestaltung. Die handwerkliche Beherrschung der daraus abgeleiteten Regeln ist für die journalistische Praxis unabdingbar, deren Kenntnis für die wissenschaftliche Analyse von Medienprodukten Grundvoraussetzung. Im Seminar sind Richtlinien journalistischen Handwerks, eingebettet in kultur- und medienwissenschaftliche Betrachtungen, Thema, ebenso neueste wissenschaftliche Erkenntnisse über das Berufsfeld am Beispiel des Printjournalismus.
Im Seminar werden journalistische Textsorten in praktischen Übungen vorgestellt. Die Bereitschaft, Texte zu verfassen, wäre eine wünschenswerte Voraussetzung der Seminarteilnahme. Themen für Referate werden ebenfalls angeboten.
Der Seminarleiter war nahezu 30 Jahre hauptberuflich journalistisch tätig, einige Jahre auch als Ausbildungsredakteur für Volontärinnen und Volontäre. Zuletzt leitete er die Kultur- und Medienredaktion der „Neuen Westfälischen“.
