Perceptions of social inequality are relevant for understanding the stability and persistence of a society’s social structure. But how do different social groups perceive and legitimize social inequalities? And do perception and legitimation strategies differ between societies? This seminar aims to shed light on the sociological relevance of inequality perceptions. We will discuss different conceptualizations of subjective inequalities and their empirical assessment in cross-country comparative survey studies. Further, we will explore country- and group-specific differences in inequality perceptions and discuss different theoretical approaches on their causal factors (e.g. cultural, socio-structural, psychological) as well as their social and political implications.
