250278 Refugee movements to Europe: Reasons and challenges (S) (WiSe 2019/2020)

In this seminar we will discuss the reasons for and effects of refugee movements to Europe. We will start with the situation inside the origin countries of refugees with a particular focus on the situation in the arabic states. Then we discuss the situation of the arabic states in a historical and cultural context. We link this background situation to the revolution in the arab world that started in 2010, and understand how this led to the movement of refugees. Then, we will illustrate the situation of refugees inside the host countries (integration policies and challenges of integration). We will mainly focus on the situation in Germany.

Requirements for participation, required level

Master of Arts: Voraussetzung ist die Einschreibung im Master of Arts Erziehungswissenschaft im WiSe 2019/20

This seminar will be taught completely in English. Students should be willing to prepare the classes by reading the indicated literature and to actively participate in the discussions during the sessions. An interest in refugee studies, arabic and islamic culture, the arab spring and arabic states is required.

a) Active participation (Studienleistung): Short individual or group-based PowerPoint Presentation and participation in one group discussion.
b) Individual performance (Prüfungsleistung): Individual paper (15-20 pages) on a topic related to the course (after agreement with the lecturer), deadline: 31 March 2020.
