230076 Great American Novels (S) (WiSe 2019/2020)

Contents, comment

In this course we will read three examples of what American Civil War novelist William De Forest termed the “Great American Novel” in his 1868 essay of the same name. According to De Forest, such a work has the “task of painting the American soul within the framework of a novel” or “a tableau of American society.” We will discuss why Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter (1850), Steinbeck’s The Grapes of Wrath (1939) and Faulkner’s Light in August (1932) can be seen as Great American Novels. We will also analyze the works with regard to form and content and gain insight into the periods and contexts these works were written and published.

Texts:
Nathaniel Hawthorne, The Scarlet Letter [1850] New York: Penguin Books, 2016.
John Steinbeck, ‘‘The Grapes of Wrath'' [1939] London: Penguin Books, 2014
William Faulkner, Light in August [1932] London: Vintage, 2005.

Other material will be made accessible or provided in class. Participants are expected to read the texts in advance.
