Mit dem explosionsartigen Wachstum der europäischen Großstädte im Verlauf des 19. Jahrhunderts (v.a. im Zuge der Industrialisierung) etabliert sich im alltäglichen Straßenbild ebenso wie in der Literatur, die sich zunehmend mit den Folgen der Verstädterung auseinandersetzt, der Flaneur als eine zentrale Gestalt moderner Großstadterfahrung. Ziel des Seminars ist es, dem historischen und literarischen 'Phänomen der Flanerie' auf die Spur zu kommen, die enge Verbindung zwischen dem Flaneur und der Großstadt zu beleuchten, theoretische Flaneurkonzeptionen (wie etwa von Baudelaire oder Benjamin) zu untersuchen und ihre Umsetzung innerhalb der Literatur zu analysieren. Dabei werden französischsprachige Texte (von Mercier über Baudelaire bis hin zu Apollinaire und den Surrealisten) im Mittelpunkt stehen; da die Flanerie ein gesamteuropäisches Phänomen ist, sollen darüber hinaus jedoch auch – je nach Interesse der TeilnehmerInnen - englisch- und deutschsprachige Texte (wie etwa von Edgar Allan Poe, Virginia Woolf, Franz Hessel und Irmgard Keun) herangezogen werden.

Voraussetzung zur Vergabe einer Studienleistung ist eine regelmäßige und aktive Teilnahme, zu der auch die Übernahme eines Referates oder eines Protokolls sowie die Mitarbeit an verschiedenen Gruppenarbeitsphasen gehört. Zusätzlich besteht die Möglichkeit, eine modulbezogene benotete Einzelleistung (Hausarbeit, Portfolio, mündliche Prüfung) zu erbringen.
