Seit dem Krimkrieg und dann verstärkt seit dem amerikanischen Bürgerkrieg hat sich eine Kriegsberichterstattung etabliert und ausgeweitet, die zunehmend auf visuelle Medien setzte. Dabei entwickelte sich auf der einen Seite eine Dialektik von Propaganda und Zensur aufseiten der Militärs und der Politik, auf der anderen Seite eine bis heute fortlaufende Konkurrenz zwischen professionell angelegter militärinterner Kriegsberichterstattung (bis hin zu den Propagandakompanien des Zweiten Weltkriegs) und der Berichterstattung durch "freie" journalistische Medien ("Kriegskorrespondenten").
Die Kontextualisierung soll an exemplarischen Fallbeispielen Stationen dieser (unabgeschlossenen) Entwicklung verdeutlichen und vertiefend analysieren.
