250390 Angst und Politik in der Abstiegsgesellschaft (S) (SoSe 2019)

In den von Oliver Nachtwey so genannten Gesellschaften des Abstiegs Europas und Nordamerikas sind konservative und extreme Rechte auf dem Vormarsch. In einigen Ländern stellen sie bereits die Regierung oder sind zumindest als Koalitionspartner beteiligt. Wie sind der Aufstieg und die Attraktivität des Autoritarismus zu erklären?

Mit Blick auf den Nationalsozialismus führt der kritische Theoretiker Franz L. Neumann in einem Aufsatz von 1954 die zunehmende Anfälligkeit der modernen Gesellschaft für die Ausbildung autoritärer und regressiver Massenbewegungen wesentlich auf Ängste zurück, die in bestimmten historischen Situationen die Menschen ergreifen und von Demagogen ausgenutzt werden können. Diese Ängste resultieren für Neumann aus der psychischen, sozialen bzw. ökonomischen und politischen Entfremdung des Menschen der Gesellschaft, in welcher kapitalistische Produktionsweise herrscht.

In dem Seminar werden wir kritisch aufarbeiten, was genau das bedeutet und inwiefern die Überlegungen von Neumann für die Erklärung aktueller Phänomene hilfreich sein können. Dazu werden wir anhand von aktueller Literatur die psychologischen, ökonomischen und politischen Faktoren für den zunehmenden Erfolg der Rechten in Europa und Nordamerika diskutieren, um so ein umfassendes, interdisziplinäres und gesellschaftstheoretisch fundiertes Verständnis des gegenwärtigen Rechtsrucks zu entwickeln.
