This course will focus on U.S. American Literature and introduce first-year students to the basics of literary studies - the tools of the trade, as it were. Participants will be taught the terms and methods of analysis and interpretation of texts in the three main literary genres, poetry, drama and narrative. They will also learn about the rules of academic writing in English and apply them to write about literary texts.
Students must purchase (unless they already own a copy) the following book:
Michael Meyer, English and American Literatures, 4th ed., Tübingen: Francke, 2011.

Die verbindlichen Modulbeschreibungen enthalten weitere Informationen, auch zu den "Leistungen" und ihren Anforderungen. Sind mehrere "Leistungsformen" möglich, entscheiden die jeweiligen Lehrenden darüber.
This course will include a series of mandatory academic reading and writing assignments, to be carried out both at home (well in advance of the session for which they are due) and during class sessions. Participants who miss more than two of the four-hour class sessions will, therefore, be required to compensate these with an oral exam or an additional writing assignment.
