Wann und wie sind Exkremente literaturfähig? Der ‚Eulenspiegel‘ scheint einen großen Teil seiner Komik daraus zu beziehen, dass der Protagonist sich ununterbrochen an falschen Orten entleert. Solcher Fäkalhumor, der auch für Mären und Fastnachtspiele charakteristisch ist, fehlt völlig, wenn in mittelalterlicher ‚Contemptus-mundi‘-Literatur die Ausscheidungen des Körpers als Indiz für seine grundsätzliche Verächtlichkeit genommen werden. Barocke Epigramme hingegen halten die Situation ‚Wann du dich erleichterst‘ für durchaus angemessen, um ein gottwohlgefälliges Gebet zum Himmel zu schicken (wobei die Exkremente dann gern dem Teufel zufallen dürfen).
Das Seminar befasst sich mit dem Vorkommen (und mit dem Tabuisieren) von ‚Scheiße‘ in verschiedenen literarischen Gattungen und Epochen (Grobianismus, Expressionismus, ‚Dirty realism‘ usw.) vom Mittelalter bis zur Gegenwart.
