231035 Disney Princesses: gender stereotypes in Disney movies from Snow White to Merida (StGr) (WiSe 2018/2019)

Contents, comment

Every one of you knows at least one Disney movie. Perhaps it's dear to you because you grew up with it. But now as adults we can take a look at our favourite Disney films from a more critical perspective.
What do the characters do? How do they interact? How are women depicted? How much agency do they have? Have representations of women and female characters changed substantially in more recent films, as opposed to the earliest ones?
The movies reflect the social conditions and societal norms that were prevalent at the
time they were released. We want to look closely at some Disney films selected by the group, focussing particularly on gender stereotypes and the construction of femininity (-ies) and masculinity (-ies) in the movies.

Requirements for participation, required level

Students doing Internationalisation at Home can earn three credit points for participating actively in the Study Group. Naturally, students who do not need credit for Int@Home can also attend simply from personal interest.
Please note that Study Groups are organised entirely by students with students for students, and live from the active input of all participants.
