Die Frage, unter der das Seminar steht, beschäftigt nicht nur besorgte Eltern von angehenden Stu-dierenden der Geschichtswissenschaft, sie fordert auch immer wieder die Historikerzunft heraus, zeitgemäße Antworten zu finden. Von der Krise des Historismus zur Kritik der Postmoderne neh-men sich die Ideen, was Geschichte denn sei und wie sie zu machen ist, dementsprechend unter-schiedlich aus. Das Seminar dient als Einführung in die prägenden Theoriedebatten des 20. Jahr-hunderts. Anhand einschlägiger Texte werden eingangs zentrale Fragen zur Aufgabe und zu den Möglichkeiten einer Geschichtswissenschaft diskutiert, um im Anschluss verschiedene Konzepte und Ansätze kennenzulernen.
