Formkonzepte der modernen Ästhetik
Was meinen Literaturwissenschaftler, wenn sie von ‚Form’ sprechen? Häufig sehr Unterschiedliches – das Seminar bietet einen historischen Überblick über verschiedene Formbegriffe, die unseren Umgang mit Literatur prägen. Neben antiken Formkonzepten nach Platon und Aristoteles und dem ästhetischen Diskurs des 18. Jahrhunderts sollen vor allem auch ästhetische Theorien der Form des 20. Jahrhunderts berücksichtigt werden, vom Russischen Formalismus bis zum New Formalism und seiner Rückkehr zu traditionellen poetischen Formen.
Lektüregrundlage bilden kürzere literaturtheoretische und ästhetische Texte, die als Scans zur Verfügung gestellt werden.Concepts of Form in Modern Aesthetics
What do we mean when we speak of ‘form’? The answers to this question can differ widely. This seminar provides a historical overview of different concepts of ‘form’ that continue to shape our understanding of literary texts. Beside ancient views of ‘form’ following Plato and Aristotle and the aesthetic discourse of the eighteenth century, the seminar will prominently feature aesthetic theories of form of the twentieth century, from Russian Formalism to New Formalism and its return to traditional poetic forms.
We will read short theoretical and aesthetic texts that will be made available as scans.

Das Seminar wird auf Englisch abgehalten. Die Bereitschaft zur Lektüre und Diskussion auf Englisch ist erwünscht.
Die Studienleistung besteht aus einem Kurzreferat. Als Prüfungsleistung verfassen die Seminarteilnehmer eine Hausarbeit von ca. 12 Seiten.
Since the seminar will be held in English, the students should be interested in reading and participating in the discussion in English.
The students will give a short presentation (Studienleistung) and write a final paper of ca. 12 pages in English or German (Prüfungsleistung).
