"Playing in the Backstreet: American Childhood from Civil War to Present" introduces American childhood(s) in the period mid-nineteenth century to the present. In the block seminar, we examine the many faces of American childhood through the lens of US history, literature, and culture.
Furthermore, we study the various ways childhood has shaped (and been shaped by) the US culture at large, from pediatrics and politics to parenting and pedagogy.
The block seminar is reading-intensive with in-class activities including film analysis, pair- and group-work and a final research-based exhibition/presentation.

The binding module descriptions contain further information, including specifications on the "types of assignments" students need to complete. In cases where a module description mentions more than one kind of assignment, the respective member of the teaching staff will decide which task(s) they assign the students.
