InterAmerican Studies are interdisciplinary area studies, which consider the American continent as a whole: the North, the center and the South, as well as the Caribbean. The topic is the plurality and diversity of societies and cultures in the Americas and their history. However, another singular feature of Inter-American Studies is its specific methodology, which consists in focusing on the interrelationships, crossings and conflicts between regions, societies and cultures. It takes into account that not only people move (migration flows) but societies as a whole are involved in communication processes (media, informational and artistic flows) as well as in interaction processes (transnational policies and social tendencies). Clearly, issues of power and violence are prominent, since such entanglements are not necessarily taking place peacefully. If the processes of hybridization, transculturation and creolization are constitutive for the Americas, it is also because they have to do with colonial and neocolonial domination. The seminar aims at offering an introduction to the approaches of various disciplines (historiography, studies of literature, culture and media as well as social sciences) that are useful to think and discuss the entanglements in the Americas and between this and other world regions.
