230317 Genres, Authors, Periods in British Literature (S) (WiSe 2018/2019)

Contents, comment

The period of Romanticism was a short but intensive phase in British (and European) literature and culture that lasted, roughly, from the 1790s to the 1820s. In this seminar, we will explore the major texts by the most important writers of the period, the new and modern self-conceptions of the writers as artists in the contexts of the Industrial Revolution, the French Revolution, and the Age of Reason, against which the Romantics pitted a strong emphasis on the emotions and imagination. We will read poetry, short stories, essays and a novel to get an impression of the breadth and variety of Romantic literary production in Britain.

Bibliography

All students must buy their own copy of Mary Shelley, Frankenstein.
All other texts we will discuss in the seminar (poems, essays, short stories) will be made available via the Lernraum towards the beginning of the semester.
