Contents, comment

Theory and its application is at the core of this MA class. The course will provide a selective survey of key approaches to cultural studies within the currently blossoming field of TransAmerican, InterAmerican and Transcultural Studies. Theoretical texts by critics like Rowe, Mignolo, Kunow, Raussert among others will serve as starting point to discuss, analyze, and categorize cultural production in performance art, music, literature, film. The objective is to test theory in practice. Primary texts/examples among others will be "The Couple in the Cage Tour", El Vez's musical citation practices, film excerps from Frozen River , the documentary In Her Own Words (Nuyorican Poet and Activist). The goal is to come to terms with a field that could be subsumed under the title "Mobility Studies in the Americas". The objective is to sharpen the capacity of students to apply theory and to link theory with analytical practice.
