Demokratieförderung rückte insbesondere in den 90er Jahren des letzten Jahrhunderts in den Fokus der Entwicklungszusammenarbeit. Hinter den unterschiedlichen Ansätzen verbarg sich die gemeinsame Annahme, dass ein demokratisches Umfeld Entwicklung erst möglich bzw. Entwicklungsprogramme deutlich effektiver machen würde. Obwohl sich auch heute noch unterschiedliche Akteure in der Demokratieförderung engagieren, befindet sich die Demokratie international gesehen auf dem Rückzug.
Im Seminar werden die zentralen Ansätze, Instrumente und Akteure in der Demokratieförderung analysiert und die gegenwärtigen Herausforderungen anhand von Fallbeispielen betrachtet.
