The seminar "Literature and Culture in the EFL Primary Classroom" will deal with texts for children in a variety of genres, but most prominently picture stories. We will consider their potential for use in teaching English to young learners, but also discuss questions such as amongst others: authenticity, the multiple affordances of visualisations, the fostering of intercultural competence and methods for working with the texts discussed in the classroom.
Participants will explore theories of how picture books work and analyse the material dealt with as works of literature as well as exploring their potential for learning and teaching English to young learners. they will also consider how to assess the suitability of multicultural picture books in fostering intercultural communicative competence in the early English classroom and apply theoretical considerations to picture books from and about southern Africa.
