Wie kein anderer russischer Schriftsteller des 19. Jahrhunderts hat Tolstoj in seinem Werk die Körperlichkeit des Menschen in den Vordergrund gestellt. einen "Hellseher des Fleisches" nannte ihn daher Dmitrij Merezkovskij. Themen wie Liebe bzw. Sexualität und Tod, die den Autor immer wieder beschäftigten, sind auf besondere Weise mit dem Körper verknüpft. Charakteristisch für Tolstojs Werk ist das extreme Schwanken zwischen Askese und Sinnlichkeit.
Das Seminar beschäftigt sich mit der Repräsentation des Körpers in einigen späten Werken Tolstojs - Der Teufel (1889), Vater Sergius (1891) oder der Kreutzersonate (1890-98). Die Texte werden in deutscher Sprache gelesen.
Zur einführenden Lektüre empfohlen:

D. Mereschkowski, Tolstoj und Dostojewski als Menschen und Künstler, Leipzig 1903.
