230112 Colloquium: Topics in Lexicography (Ko) (WiSe 2004/2005)

Short comment

Contents, comment

The lexicon is the central area of language documentation in a number of key areas of the study of language. This includes traditional practical lexicgraphy, of course, as well as modern text-technological techniques based on the lexicographic databases and computer-treatable data models for dictionaries which are used by the well-known dictionary publishing companies. But the lexicon is also the central area of investigation in the scientific description and explanation of language, i.e. in descriptive, theoretical and computational linguistics, as well as in pycholinguistics. Modern easy-to-use computational techniques have in fact triggered a process of increasing convergence between practical lexicographic activities and theoretical linguistic studies, so that nowadays lexicographers from all kinds of background, whether practical and commercial, or didactic, or theoretical, work together in dictionary design and production projects for both print and hypertext media, including spoken language and multimodal lexica.

The colloquium is open to any students and colleagues who have an active interest in all matters lexical, whether practical or lexical. The colloquium programme will consist of reports by participants on their own work in the area (or in rougly related areas), by reports on current research issues in the field, and by joint practical work. The agenda for the term will be negotiated in the first meeting, but will be deliberately kept somewhat flexible.

One of the operational goals of the colloquium is to give participants practice in presenting and discussing their results in preparation for workshops, conferences, classes and examinations.
