Das Seminar wird einen Überblick über poetologische Programme, literarische Formen und kulturelle Diskurse des 19. Jahrhunderts geben. Dabei sollen - soweit dies in der Kürze der Zeit überhaupt möglich ist - die Konturen der wichtigsten Epochen (Romantik, Junges Deutschland/Vormärz, Realismus, Naturalismus, Symbolismus) umrissen und Texte aus den drei traditionellen Gattungen (Lyrik, Dramatik, Epik), aber auch aus neuen Genres (z.B. Feuilleton) gelesen werden. Die Auswahl der Texte zielt zugleich auf typische Diskurse der Zeit (z.B. Phantastik, Nationalmythologie, Psychologie, Darwinismus, Historismus). Auf diese Weise möchte das Seminar "Ansichten vom 19. Jahrhundert" (Dolf Sternberger) entwerfen.

Behandelt werden u.a. folgende Texte, die alle in Einzel- oder Sammelausgabe des Reclam Verlages vorliegen:

  • E.T.A. Hoffmann: Der Sandmann
  • Theodor Storm: Carsten Curator
  • Hugo von Hofmannsthal: Das Märchen der 672. Nacht (in: Erzählungen)
  • Heinrich von Kleist: Penthesilea
  • Georg Büchner: Dantons Tod
  • Richard Wagner: Siegfried
  • Theodor Fontane: Effi Briest

Ein Reader mit Gedichten wird zu Beginn des Semesters bereitgestellt.
