Affect and cognition have long been viewed as separate entities and as a result the study of emotional and non-emotional processes historically emerged as two separate fields: Cognitive Neurosciences and Affective Neurosciences. Nowadays emotional and cognitive processes are, however seen as being highly interactive. The goal of the present seminar is to analyse/review the relationship between cognition and affect in the context of mood and anxiety disorders. By reviewing aspects of the most updated research literature data in the field, the seminar aims to address some of the following questions: What are the cognitive dysfunctions found in mood and anxiety disorders? Are the cognitive dysfunctions a consequence of mood and anxiety disorders or are they premorbid markers of mood /anxiety disorders or are both affect and cognitive dysfunctions expressions of the same dysregulated biology? The implications for treatment will be outlined as well.
