Der Grundkurs bietet anhand der Conquista Mexikos eine Einführung in die Epoche der europäischen Expansion und der Entdeckung, Eroberung und Kolonisation des spanischen Amerika im Übergang vom späten Mittelalter zur Frühen Neuzeit. Thematische Schwerpunkte beziehen sich auf die Voraussetzungen, Bedingungen und Techniken der Conquista, die Umstände und Folgen des europäisch-indigenen Kulturkontaktes sowie die frühen Grundlagen und Strukturen der spanischen Kolonialherrschaft. Zusammen mit den inhaltlichen Aspekten werden theoretische und methodische Grundfragen der Geschichtswissenschaft behandelt, zentrale historische Arbeitstechniken eingeübt und wichtige Hilfsmittel und -wissenschaften vorgestellt.
