Die Vorlesung behandelt Staat und Gesellschaft in Rußland im langen 19. Jahrhundert, d.h. beginnend mit der Ära Alexanders I. bis zur Russischen Revolution von 1917. Thematisiert werden u.a. die gesellschaftliche Entwicklung (staatsbedingte Gesellschaft, ständische Ordnung, zwischen Stand und Klasse), das Verhältnis von Staat und multiethnischer Gesellschaft ("Kolonialisierung", "Russifizierung", Autokratie und Öffentlichkeit, die Bedeutung des Dissens, wie z.B. Freimaurer, Dekabristen, intelligencija oder die narodniki) sowie die wirtschaftliche Entwicklung (Bauernbefreiung, Industrialisierung).
