Der Begriff Gouvernementalität ist von Michel Foucault geprägt worden und bezieht sich bei ihm auf moderne Formen der Regierung. „Unter Regierung verstehe ich die Gesamtheit der Institutionen und Praktiken, mittels derer man die Menschen lenkt, von der Verwaltung bis zur Erziehung“ (Foucault 1996, S. 118). Vor diesem Hintergrund fragt das Seminar nach dem systematischen Zusammenhang von Erziehung, Bildung und Gouvernementalität. Außerdem wird nach der systematischen Bedeutung gefragt, die Arbeiten Foucaults und den später auf ihn folgenden Gouvernementalitätsstudien für die Erziehungswissenschaft zukommt.
Dazu werden im Seminar zunächst Grundlagentexte erarbeitet. Dann werden an beispielhaften Gouvernementalitätsstudien in Feldern von Erziehung und Bildung die Erkenntnisinteressen, methodischen Vorgehensweisen und analytischen Erträge reflektiert und diskutiert, um darüber die oben gestellten Fragen nach dem systematischen Stellenwert für die Erziehungswissenschaft zu beantworten.
