This course will focus on U.S. American Protest Songs from the 20th and 21st century, from Dylan to Springsteen, from Green Day to System of a Down. It will bring together conceptual strands from popular culture, musicology, US-American history, socio-political studies and the EFL classroom. We will construct a theoretical framework together that seeks to shed light on songs as media to express discontent and as literary texts and teaching material. In a next step we will analyze a broad variety of songs against this backdrop. We will situate the songs in socio-political contexts and ponder possible teaching units. Through this, we will expand our knowledge of analyzing literary texts, of creative teaching methods and US-American Cultural Studies.
