Das Epigramm, ursprünglich Bezeichnung für eine „Aufschrift“, ist eine Gedichtform, die durch Kürze und Pointierung besticht. Für die europäische Literatur sind die Epigramme der römischen Dichter Martial und Catull von besonderer Bedeutung. Vor allem Martials satirische Epigramme wirkten auf die europäische Literatur.
Das Seminar beginnt deshalb bei den römischen Epigrammatikern, um in der Folge vor allem deutsche Epigramme – z.B. Logau, Scheffler, Lessing, Goethe – zu untersuchen. Aus der Perspektive der Gattungstheorie sollen die Zusammenhänge von Literatur und Erkenntnis, Literatur und Kritik sowie Literatur und Witz diskutiert werden.

Im Seminar steht das gemeinsame Arbeiten an den Texten im Vordergrund.
