Understanding the interplay between movement planning, perception, and cognitive processes.
The course aims to provide a brief introduction into several topics of motor control and perception, such as anticipatory planning, motor hysteresis, perceptual hysteresis, and subliminal motor priming. After a critical review of the literature, students will learn how to design their own perceptual-motor experiment, conduct the experiment, and learn how to analyse the data.
One third of the course will be devoted to literature review and discussion, one third to an introduction into the open source experimental software PsychoPy (https://www.psychopy.org/) and the programming of the experiment, and one third to an introduction into the open source statistics software R (https://www.r-project.org/). Students are expected to bring their own laptops for the course. All parts of the course (including the experiment) can be conducted online if the situation demands it.
The students attending this course are expected to actively participate in the discussion and will be asked to question, with a critical state of mind, the topics covered during the course. The class will be held in English, as well as the oral examinations and the presentations students will have to give. The final evaluation of the student will be a combination of the following parameters: participation and critical thinking shown during class, presentation/experiment, oral examination.
