230443 Education for sustainable development in ELT (S) (SoSe 2024)

Contents, comment

In this course, we will deal with the concept of Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) as a central goal of English language teaching.
Defined as a school’s interdisciplinary task in the core curriculum, we will examine to what extent ESD is connected to the topics taught in the English classroom. Therefore, we will approach ESD by familiarising ourselves with the United Nation’s Agenda 2030 and the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), which are closely connected to questions of human rights and social justice.
Based on these theoretical insights, we will explore how to thematise global issues and integrate ESD into the ELT classroom. In doing so, we will develop examples (lesson sequences and/or plans, materials, or even workshops, …) for an English Language classroom that contributes to a democratic, sustainable, and responsible society at all levels.
