This course will focus on African American experiences in the USA from 1619 to the present, using historical texts, songs(spirituals, blues, rap), excerpts from novels ("Gone With the Wind", "The Wind Done Gone", "Beloved", "The Color Purple","Praise Song for the Widow", The Women of Brewater Place"), short stories ("The Adventures of the Dread Sisters") and poetry (Lucille Clifton, Langston Hughes) as sources of information, as entry points into the painful and beautiful story of these experiences.
