How does sociology theorize the body and how does this help to understand social phenomena? How do social concepts of gender shape the way members of society see, feel and understand the(ir) body? How do we do gender as a bodily practice in everyday life? What’s the matter with the dualism of sex and gender? How can the materialiy of the body help to deconstruct gender norms?
The aim of this course is to deliberate the questions above through close examinations of both classical and contemporary theoretical and empirical texts. Social and cultural concepts of gender will be the starting point to discuss the matter of social construction and the materiality of the body.
This course is part of the “international track” and will be taught in English. Participation requires reading original English texts. Students are invited to practice and improve their skills in reading, writing and speaking in English.
