The voice plays a central role in gendered being in and of the world; it is gendered and gendering. This seminar will investigate the relationship between gender and voice, focusing specifically on the singing use of voice. In addition to readings from voice studies, music sociology, ethno/queer musicology, lived body phenomenology, and trans* studies, we'll be working with research material, jointly interpreting interviews from my dissertation project on "Experiencing Gender and the Sounding of Self: becoming in trans* singing" (working title). To facilitate this in-depth exploration into the interdisciplinary world of gender-voice studies, apply this acquired knowledge to empirical material, delve into interpretation, and reflect on research methodologies, this class will meet every two weeks, starting 10 October 2019, for double sessions (14-18h). Regular attendance is expected. More information and a detailed syllabus will be presented directly in the first session, which is mandatory if you wish to take part in this course.
