Die Veranstaltung führt in die wissenschaftliche Psychologie ein. Im ersten Teil werden historisch orientiert wesentliche Schulrichtungen psychologischen Forschens (z.B. Anfänge der Experimentellen Psychologie im 19. Jahrhundert, Psychoanalyse, Behaviorismus) vorgestellt. Der zweite Teil der Vorlesung gibt einen Überblick zu den verschiedenen Teildisziplinen der Psychologie (z.B. Allgemeine Psychologie, Sozialpsychologie oder Klinische Psychologie) und ihren Berufsfeldern.
