Darwins Werk „On the Origin of Species“ von 1859 löste eine Debatte aus, die einerseits die wissenschaftliche Stichhaltigkeit der Darwinschen Theorie und andererseits deren weltanschauliche und politische Implikationen zum Gegenstand hatte. Auch in Deutschland führte dies zu Auseinandersetzungen, wo der Darwinismus-Streit unmittelbar an den Materialismus-Streit anschloss und auf breiter Basis heftig ausgetragen wurde. Beim Materialismus-Streit der 1850er ging es um die weltanschaulichen Konsequenzen der Naturwissenschaften.
Der Fokus des Seminars liegt auf deutschsprachigen Quellen ab den 1860er Jahren.

Es handelt sich um ein textintensives Seminar, deshalb wird als Vorbereitung der Seminarsitzungen die intensive Lektüre der Texte erwartet. In den Seminarsitzungen werden die Beteiligung an den Diskussionen, die kontinuierliche Mitarbeit und die Übernahme einer Sitzungsmoderation vorausgesetzt.
