270913 Too much, too little, just right: emotion regulation and mental health (BS) (WiSe 2017/2018)

Contents, comment

Emotions are mental reactions marking situation-specific context. People regulate their emotions differently, resulting in diverse and often adverse outcomes. That is why emotion regulation has become a target of neuroscientific and experimental research as well as a target of clinical intervention. Concerning emotion regulation deficits, emotion „under-control“ has received far more scientific attention than emotion „over-control“.
Within this seminar we will touch on issues like: Why do some people experience more negative emotionality than others? Which strategies of emotion regulation are adaptive and which are related to mental health disorders and impaired functioning? Are there interventions that effectively teach more adaptive emotion regulation skills?
Finally we will look into treatment methods that claim to enhance emotion regulation competencies for under- as well as over-controlling patients (e.g. mindfulness-based intervention strategies, DBT, radically open DBT, etc.).
