250273 Inclusion in Canada: Developments, challenges and strategies for an inclusive pedagogy (S) (SoSe 2023)

Contents, comment

In this seminar, we communicate in English: Submissions (Studienleistungen/Prüfungsleistungen) also need to be made in English. One of the aims of this course is to encourage students to train their English and expand their existing knowledge along with the global topic of the course in English. This will be an English course with one lecturer, from the University of Alberta, Edmonton, Canada (Dr. Shiva Zarezadeh-Kheibari).
Inclusive education has become a global norm so that the debates on inclusive school and classroom development also has stronger references. This course will introduce students to special and inclusive education and approaches to creating classroom contexts for students with diverse needs in Canada. Within an inclusive education context, all teachers are expected to support the range of students who will be in their classrooms. As such, this course is designed to facilitate students’ ability to design classroom instruction and classroom environments to enhance learning for all students. Moreover, a significant aspect will be the adaptation of teaching for students who are deaf or hard of hearing, using literature and video material provided by the lecturer.
Students will view and study assigned course readings (both text and video) throughout the course via the Perusall platform and apply knowledge to in-class activities and assignments in 3 zoom sessions. In this seminar among other digital tools, the innovative Perusall platform will be used to provide space and opportunity to engage with each other around articles and videos. An introduction to the platform during the first sessions for a good basis for their assignments will be given to the students.
• Block I: Development and the history of special education focusing on learning and special educational institutions in Canada (4 sessions)
• Block II: Challenges in Inclusive and Exclusive Practices in Canada (4 sessions)
• Block III: Strategies to understand and support students with special needs (7 sessions)
