300655 The Arts of Resistance: James C. Scott, Zomia, and Everyday Resistance (MA: Soziologie der globalen Welt) (S) (SoSe 2025)

Contents, comment

This course will introduce the outstanding scholarship of James C. Scott, who has taught at Yale University. He conceptualized the hidden and everyday resistance of subaltern groups in Southeast Asia and in the world. Zomia stands for the ethnic minorities in the mountain massif of Southeast Asia, bordering China and India, and their resistance to the state and extraction. But his scholarship was much more ambitious: He provides us with a detailed account of the inside of the state and the
global history of hidden resistance, starting with the resistance of slaves up to the resistance of peasants. Starting with Scott´s scholarship, the course then takes a broader look at everyday resistance and the critical discussion of Scott´s work.
