Human language is essentially creative: It allows us to express ideas we have never heard before but also to create new forms and process meanings going well beyond the conventional language system. This seminar offers an hands-on approach to one particular creative mechanism that has received broad interest in semantics and pragmatics: so-called coercion. The seminar offers an introduction to coercion theories and psycholinguistic experiments testing these theories. Based on these studies, we will develop and conduct our own studies in the seminar using online experimentation. Students can also develop and conduct their own projects within the seminar.
