Das Seminar bietet einen einführenden Überblick über die Forschung zur Außenpolitik von Staaten unter den Bedingungen von Global Governance. Es stellt verschiedene theoretische Ansätze für die Analyse außenpolitischer Entscheidungen und Aktivitäten von Staaten vor. Die Ansätze werden empirisch veranschaulicht anhand von Fallstudien darüber, wie verschiedene Staaten – u.a. China, Deutschland, Großbritannien, Russland und die USA – auf aktuelle Prozesse weltpolitischen Wandels reagieren und versuchen, diese Prozesse zu beeinflussen. Die Prozesse des Wandels sind vielgestaltig und umfassen etwa die Globalisierung der Weltwirtschaft, Machtverschiebungen aufgrund „aufsteigender Mächte“ und neue weltpolitische Leitthemen wie den Klimawandel. Das Seminar thematisiert dabei auch, wie der Aufstieg populistischer Formen des Nationalismus die etablierten Institutionen und Strukturen von Global Governance unter Druck setzt.
