Contents, comment

A survey instruments' quality largely determines the quality of empirical social research. This seminar offers a comprehensive overview of the various details related to the construction of scales and questionnaires in the context of empirical social research: Besides the question of how researchers proceed from theory to operationalization to measurement, the assumption of classical test theory, various scaling techniques, and measurement instruments, as well as the quality criteria of measurement, are addressed. In addition, particular emphasis is placed on the ever more important format of online surveys.

In the course of the seminar, students will acquire a comprehensive theoretical understanding of the methodological aspects that need to be considered in constructing survey instruments. Furthermore, they will be enabled to (further) develop (online) survey instruments on their own and to further deepen the knowledge acquired in the Bachelor.

This seminar requires some basic knowledge of Stata. Therefore, students who have worked with other statistical software in their previous studies are recommended to learn Stata basics before the seminar.
