Am Beispiel von Bosnien und Herzegowina im 19. und 20. Jh. lassen sich verschiedene Prozesse beobachten, die sowohl religionsgeschichtlich als auch soziologisch betrachtet relevant sind. Auf der einen Seite ist die religiöse Landschaft von einer religiösen Pluralität geprägt (Christentum, Islam, Judentum), in der religiöse Organisationen stets um gesellschaftlichen Einfluss bemüht sind. Auf der anderen Seiten wirken sich politische und soziale Änderungen auf die Religionen dergestalt aus, dass diese zeitweise entweder politisch stark unterstützt oder unterdrückt werden. Das Ziel des Seminars ist es, neben den wichtigsten theoretischen Zugängen zum Nationalismus und Identitätspolitik diejenigen gesellschaftlichen Dynamiken in Bosnien und Herzegowina herauszuarbeiten, welche seit dem 19. Jh. starke Wechselwirkung mit Religionen aufweisen.
